CSX 8888 - The Runaway

On Tuesday, May 15, 2001, CSX locomotive 8888 left Stanley Yard near Toledo, Ohio on an un-manned excursion through the Ohio countryside. With 47 cars in tow (22 loads and 25 empties, 2898 tons) she meandered south at speeds up to 47 MPH. She was brought to a stop some 66 miles and three hours later after another locomotive was coupled to the end, allowing Trainmaster Jon Hosfeld to leap aboard and shut her down. Per RR Picture Archives, CSX 8888 is ex-Conrail 6410, an SD40-2 built/delivered in September of 1977 to Order Number 767078. This unit has frame/serial number 767078-7.

Posted by:chappelln19 This Comes From Via Unknown (wishes to stay Unknown) "I myself cannot give you a definite answer on that. What I can tell you is that we do have a huge amount of SD40-2 units setting in Huntington right now with 8888 being one of them. These units are still here for a reason and you and I know why. CSX is going to make them Dash 3's with Wabtec Motive Power Computers. My belief is that 8888 will be one of them. I will keep you informed. At the time being, we are rebuilding a lot of GP38-2 units into GP38-3 units. It is still up in the air right now on rather or not we will be doing 4 axle units or 6 axle units in 2015. But what I do know is they want to rebuild 45 units (Dash 3) in Huntington next year." My friend is wanting to stay Unknown Named but he is a CSX employee.
