Please correct me if anything is wrong. Please feel free to add to where the current locomotive might be. I update as soon as I find out something about a former WC locomotive. WC 6591 and WC 6596 both were retired but have since been reinstated with new prime movers."
On 1-21-2005, Dave Howrath Jr. reported: "WC Locomotive Status....Updated"

The engineer opened up the hood door and the spark's from the cylinder's started fire to some of the unused fuel and oil under the exhaust manifold, nothing major but it impressed me as it is the first one I've seen that close up. 2555 | Sold to Wisconsin Great Northern Railway, Spooner, WI. On 2-22-2005, sd45hogger reported: "I understand the former WC 2555 (GP-35) is currently on the roster of the Northern Plains Railroad based out of Fordville, ND. It is operating as their 3509. Here's its lineage: NPR 3509, Ex- Wisconsin & Great Northern 2555, Ex-WC 2555, Nee SOO 731." On 3-2-2005, Josh Topper, Engineer/Mechanic on the Wisconsin Great Northern RR, reported: "WC 2555 was purchased running from the CN auction. It ran as backup on the WGN untill the turbo went out. One of the drive gears shattered after the oil cooler sprung a leak and leaked all the water into the crankcase. We replaced the turbo the first time, but that one had a bad clutch. It would kick out at too low of rpm and cause the engine to die. The second turbo worked great. We continued to use it as backup untill its sale to Northern Plains RR. For us a GP 35 was a lot more power than needed, and we had just gotten our SW1 running again. NPR renumbered 2555 to 3509. The 35 is for model (GP35) and 09 means its their 9th GP35. I always enjoyed running her. The power was incredible, the scream of that turbo is the one sound I love to hear. Personally I would rather run a GP30 again. I got the opportunity to run Soo 700, by far more fun than any of our other units. Hope this clears up all questions." |

6615 | Stored. On 8-4-2005, Kelley D. Ellison reported: "Hey all, As of this writing, (0020 hrs, 8/4/05) WC 6615 is out of commission. She is part of a big unit-set on the former IC Iowa Div. M33791-03 train along with WC 6616. They are dead right now in Genoa, Il. At 2350hrs the crew called the Diesel Doc in Canada to tell them that the 6615 was getting constant wheel slip above run four. The doc asked if they had tried to cut out any traction motors and see if that helped. The crew responded that they had just taken the unit off-line instead. The DD then got VERY upset with them and scolded them that before they go calling him AFTER the fact, they need to have the engine on line and try other options first. He couldn't tell them what to do with the unit off line. They said something to the effect of "we shall tell the relief crew, as we are dead in 10 min. anyhow, and 1/4 mile from our landing spot. " or something like that. ;-) So......WC 6615 might be killed tonight as well. Thought I would give a heads up. Any REAL engineers out there that can speculate if it is a big thing wrong? Later!" |

6634 | Sold to Larry's Truck & Electric. Scrapped for sure, reportedly in Mexico in 2003. On 4-25-2005, Scott Lawrence asked: "Do you know for a fact she was scrapped? Your statement is a little ambigious... why would she be sold to Mexico only to be scrapped? So its not clear if she was scrapped by Larry, or was sold to Mexico... it seems unlikely it would be both. Could you clarify, please? She is a former EL unit, and I'm trying to determine if she still exists. Please let me know anything you can find out! Her EL number was 3656. [She went] to CR 6687, [then] to Helm 7002 , [finally] to WC 6634. I started building this page last week: Erie Lackawanna Survivors " |
