March 4, 1881
The Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad Company is incorporated by Florida Legislature. William Dudley Chipley is named Vice President and General Superintendant. Along with the incorporation papers comes a land grant of 3,880,000 acres. The railroad would actually take delivery of only 2,830,000 acres.
May 9, 1881
The Louisville & Nashville Railroad gains control of the Pensacola & Atlantic. The L&N is to be the major financier for the construction of the railroad
June 1, 1881
Construction of 161 miles of track begins. Fred de Funiak, General Manager of the L&N, becomes the first President of the Pensacola & Atlantic.
May 9, 1882
Track reaches the edge of the Blackwater River.
August 15, 1882
Escambia Bay Bridge is completed The first train with passengers crosses and jourheys as far as the Yellow River in the care of Engineer Michael Carroll, Conductor F.R.Mayson, and Fireman George Mason .
April 26, 1883
The first through train from Pensacola arrives in Jacksonville. Peter W. Kelly, Engineer; John Register, Brakeman; Pete Moore, Porter. This comes to be known as the "Blue Ribbon Run."

Pensacola to Lake de Funiak in one hour, ten minutes for the 80 miles.
January 1, 1885
The P&A ceased operations as an independant line, is incorporated into the L&N system. Chipley becomes Land Commissioner for the company
February 12, 1885
The Florida Legislature grants a charter to the Florida Chautauqua Association "..to establish and maintain an educational institution known as an Assembly on the general plan of the Chautauqua, New York, with courses of lecture and class instruction in art, science, philosophy, history, literature, theology and morals, and other branches of study. The said assembly to be located at Lake de Funiak, Walton County, Florida.

The First Florida Chautauqua season begins at Lake de Funiak
