After documenting the repairs on WN # 1500, Arlyn Colby discovered that the road crew had some covered hoppers on the ground back in Barron, Wisconsin. The crew at Norma had their work well in hand, so Arlyn hot-footed it back home to see what had happened there.

Arlyn says, "On Tuesday morning, April 22, as the WN crew was finishing switching
Barron, 5 hopper cars derailed. 2 were empty plastics cars and 3
were loaded with turkey food." Webmaster says, "Click on the picture to see it full-size."

The 2 empty plastics cars were rerailed quite easily using a
rerailing frog. They were then pulled by 1501 to the west side of
Barron. d05.jpg -- http://tinyurl.com/66k376

The 3 loaded cars would pose much more of a problem. These would be
pulled to the east by 34 (if possible). d07.jpg -- http://tinyurl.com/6zupbm
The first step was to cut (torch) the rail as the rail laying on its
side would continue to tip as the cars would be pulled. d08.jpg -- http://tinyurl.com/65zeqb

While this was going on, the Jenny O-Turkey Store boys were using
their trackmobile to get a loaded car on the west side of Barron. d10.jpg -- http://tinyurl.com/6q3roq

The workers worked hard trying to rerail the first car, but with one
rail on its side and the heavy weight, the wheel didn't want to climb
back onto the rail. d12.jpg -- http://tinyurl.com/58afax
SHOOT -- Almost had it!! d13.jpg -- http://tinyurl.com/6223dm
After some more unsuccessful efforts, the day was called. Plans are to rerail it on Wednesday. (Click here)
