From the Ready Lens of George Winkler, a shot of a Lake States or early Wisconsin Central days train returning from the Power Plant caught by George between 6th and 5th streets a 1/2 block from where I live. The Power Plant was on it's last days, and traffic was down to 3 cars of coal every-other-day. In this instance, the train is returning with empties, so they didn't go down with any cars. During Lake States, multiple unit diesels were not uncommon, versus what we had seen under Soo Line operations. The only time I had seen two engines together being used on the M&T would be on a Sunday, when the crew on the Sunday Tramp would use the Nekoosa Line power to switch with, the thinking being that they could get more done with two units versus one. Here we have an ex-Milwaukee Road GP-38-2 and a Soo Line GP9 toddling along on the M&T. Keith

When I was shooting the M&T, Lake States was still making the trip to switch both the Canning Company and the Power Plant yet. I had just gotten done shooting the Curve around the backside of the Johnson Garment Company and I heard the Train coming, so I got off the track and waited. Lo, here came a three-unit, all-Soo engine consist pulling a single Fruit Growers Express insulated Box Car for the Canning Company. Leading was this unit, an ex-550-series Soo Line engine renumbered into the 4220-series, itself no stranger to the M&T. Keith

The middle unit, GP35 # 731, of the consist from M&T-167. I caught this as the train returned from the Canning Co. headed back uptown by the west 5th Street crossing. Keith

Same train as in M&T-167 after it passed me at West 3rd Street on it's way to the Canning Company. Keith

Same train as M&T-167, but this is their trailing unit now the leading unit coming back from the Canning Co., caught at West 5th Street. Keith

I really hadn't gotten very far shooting the M&T when the train captured in M&T-167 returned from the Canning Co. Here I caught them at the West 4th Street crossing after they had passed me at West 5th Street, toting their single car of canned goods. Keith

On another Saturday, I was as far shooting the M&T as Park Street, south of where I live, when the "Local" came back from the Canning Co. I couldn't located the companion photo to this one of the engine crossing Park St. On this day, they had but one locomotive. Keith

Same train as M&T-172, now crossing West 7th Street. Keith
