MILW Wausau Depot North End 5-12-77 Joe Stauber Photo.jpg (below, 885 x 602, 6-1)
The famed Milwaukee Road Depot in Wausau, Wis., the former Icon of Wausau Insurance before it was sold. The new owners of Wausau Insurance have since divested themselves of this building, and I believe the Boy Scouts of America own it now.

At the time of this photo, Wausau Insurance owned it already, and had for some 7 years by the time of this photo. The Agent, Operator, Clerks, Engineers, Brakemen and Conductors all worked out of the Wausau Yard Office by this time, located two blocks straight ahead in the Photograph.

This is the much-photographed North End of the Depot; note the larger "WAUSAU" signboard, put up there by Wausau Insurance for TV Advertising purposes. This view looks south from Franklin Street.

The Mosinee Patrol skips home northwards to Wausau through Weston, Wis, April 9, 1977. Weston was only an unincorporated township at this date, but growing. Above the locomotive and foreshortened train, you can make out the factory of Wausau Homes. The spur track leaving the Valley to the right is the lead track in to the WPS Weston Power Plant, located off to the right about 1/4 mile west (The older plant, now referred to as "Weston 1 & 2").

Jon Ruesch photo. Jon stood on the Highway 51 overpass to shoot this. You would never believe what this area looks like today. The area to the right of the high voltage power poles harbors the dumper and receiving yard for Weston 3; 1 & 2 take their coal from Weston 3's stock pile.

This is very early in Milwaukee's 3rd (and final) bankruptcy. The single car of paper from Mosinee confirms that. Milwaukee's last bankruptcy and the public announcement of it scared off a lot of business. By 1985, when the Soo Line took over what was left of the Milwaukee Road, Mosinee Papers wasn't doing any business with the Railroad. It took Wisconsin Central to get the business back.

Milwaukee #262small.jpg (below, 890 x 729, 6-6)
This photo is labeled "262", but my best guess is that this is train # 475 headed south out of Wausau ca. 1972 in a shot by Bob Welke.

This shot is just south of the crossing of the C&NW Eland-Marshfield line diamond, a spot called "Wausau Junction".

I would guess this to be train 475 headed back to New Lisbon. There was a second "Patrol" that worked out of New Lisbon as far north as Brokaw if needed prior to 1977. They did the local work in places like Necedah, Rudolf, Junction City, Dancy and Knowlton. The train was # 472-473 as far as Junction City, Wis., and if the train needed to go farther north they became # 474-475.

As far as I know, this train handled Westbound Cars off the Valley to New Lisbon, where they were set out for movement westwards to La Crosse and Pig's Eye Yard in St. Paul. Mostly carload paper.

I've never been certain if 472-475 and 400-401 were all on the road at the same time or just what the actual operating scheme was. Milwaukee Road did their level best to move the traffic they had on the Valley as expeditiously as they could.

The 472-475 trains were annulled during the Bankruptcy, and I have no idea if they were ever reinstated thereafter.
