The Greenwood Line - Part 15

# 18 G-Line Hinker Rd West.jpg (below)
The two-lane dirt trail is the Greenwood Line r-o-w roadbed. The Greenwood Line turned to the North-northwest not far from behind where I stood to shoot this, crossed Hinker Road, and then swung directly West with Rock Creek flowing along the north side of the r-o-w.

I remember Dad paced the Train when I got my ride from Loyal to Greenwood on Hinker Road from Owen Avenue. I grinned and waved at Dad at this crossing as we clunked across on our way to Greenwood.

Between this crossing of Hinker Road and Owen Avenue, the Greenwood Line was very easily chased by road, one of the few places along the line. It was in sight and not far off.

Hinker Road looking east. You can barely notice the roadbed because of the fold in the trees in the center of the photograph.

At least here, there was enough of a "Tunnel" in the foliage to show where the Greenwood Line was. This looks east towards Loyal at Owen Avenue. Not far in to the trees, the Greenwood Line made a loop around a small hillock rather than going through it with a cut.

Once again, dead-ahead is the Greenwood Line roadbed heading through the trees in the center of this photo.

# 22 G-Line Tie Left at Owen Ave fr 1982.jpg (below)
The Greenwood Line was taken up in the fall of 1982. This portion was ripped up before winter set up. Imagine my surpise, 22 years later, to find a solitary tie left at the foot of Owen Avenue. Only 2 feet away were shod horse tracks; this area is VERY Amish.

From Bruce Oldenberg's Greenwood Line CD, looking eastwards from Owen Avenue where the Greenwood Line bent around a small hillock. Note the scrappers have started their work.

G-Line Last Train Order.jpg (below)
The last running order written for the Greenwood Line local. This was a typical order, since the Soo began running everything as "Extras" in the early 1970's, giving the train on the Greenwood Line sole right to be out there. Thinking back, I really can't see the over riding need to do this, since it was obvious the train would be the only thing out there besides the wildlife and God.

Rules, however, are rules.

"Stargardt" was long time 1st Operator Gordy Stargardt.

The Soo Line's heartfelt abandonment notice from 1970. This started the ball rolling until everything culminated in 1982 with the eventual abandonment of the Greenwood Line.
