Wisconsin Historical Images - Fairchild & Western train at Greenwood, WHi-24760.jpg (below)
Something for those wondering about the Fairchild & North-Eastern, and F&NE train at Greenwood, crossing the Black River, looking to me that they are headed west towards Fairchild.

What remained of the F&N-E in Greenwood used by the Soo stopped short of where this bridge over the Black was. I think you can still find the concrete footings for this bridge in Greenwood.

This is not to be confused with a similiar bridge on the Soo Line over Rock Creek, which was similiar.

A sarcastic editorial from Tribune-Record-Gleaner Editor Bob Berglund about the Soo Line and it's record profit years---when, at the same time, the Soo was giving REALLY crappy service to the Customer's it had on the Greenwood Line.

In the spring of 1972, the Soo Line sent a MOW Work Extra out on the Greenwood Line and dropped a pile of used ties (Mostly scavenged from the now-abandoned Athens Line) at several "Key" spots along the Greenwood Line, ostensibly for "Tie Replacement". Although used, most were still fairly new, being new ties used by the Soo in 1966 as replacements on the Athens Line---those that weren't pilfered before the Soo Line put them in, that is.

On the Greenwood Line, these ties laid all summer in the spots the Soo Line piled them, awaiting a Tie Gang to insert them that never arrived. That fall, another Work Extra came out and picked up all these ties from where they were left and took them off to who-knows-where. No tie replacement got done in 1972, ever.

Dad always fumed, "You can bet the Greenwood Line got charged for Tie Replacement work that never got done!!!"

This Bruce Oldenberg shot would be about a 1/2 mile farther east from the last photo. Note the roadbed on this stretch was in good condition. Between Loyal and Greenwood the track was always pretty good. For whatever reason, it had adequate ballast under it.

In the last photo it looked as though the Soo had dumped in some of that white crap, although I do not remember ANY rehab taking place between Loyal and Greenwood at all, ever. The presence of the white rock indicates it did. I guess I never heard of it.

Like here---this looks like Soo Line's famous blue-grey Dresser Trap Rock Ballast. There must have been some work done after Dad was taken off in 1978.

A half mile farther east and we find this. A farmer has covered the tracks over in order to access a field. Note the scrappers aren't this far---yet.

In the midst of the "Jog" around the hillock between Loyal and Greenwood. Once again, the track shows Dresser Ballast, which I do not recall ever being put there.

The Trestle that crossed what amounts to a "Dry Wash"---when it rains hard it has water in it but is otherwise dry, being more of a drainage fold than anything else.

I'll warn you all, Bruce Oldenberg, the photographer, has a "Bridge Fetish" and he documents almost every one in detail. Great for modelling purposes!
